There are no words that sum up the sacrifice one generation of men gave to the rest of us. Almost half the British Empire servicemen who died in Belgium during WW1 are missing. The Tyne Cot memorial commemorates 35,000 British and New Zealand men who have no known grave. Most died during the Battle of Passchendale in 1917. The headstones belong to 12000 men who were identified


I have a great Uncle who died in this Battle, Lewis Smith. He was a Red Cross Ambulance driver and as considered a civilian is not commemorated here. We have left a cross with his name on at the Cross of Sacrifice.
