The tiny village of Beaumont Hamel is surrounded with Military cemeteries of all nations. I despair to see rows and rows of headstones where the average age of the men (boys) is just 23. What a horrendous sacrifice of a young generation of men . Just down the road from Serre Cemetery was the Newfoundland (Canadian) Memorial. From a viewpoint, well-preserved trenches can be seen. The proximity of large artillery craters shows how close fire was. It must have been terrifying to hunch down in narrow trenches filled with cold water and mud and watch heavy fire whistle over your head.
