I never really "got" geology at school, rock formations were just not my thing. Not unless it was the creation of diamonds or gold.

This afternoon, due to a brilliant local guide, it all came alive. Iceland is totally actively volcanic and grows by 1cm a year - sideways. They expect a volcanic eruption every day. In fact, Volcano Katla is 10 years overdue!

In one town the Earth's molten core is about 6ft under the surface. It's too warm to bury their dead and they have to use a cemetery out of town. Just down the road, another unpronounceable town gets 300 earthquakes A DAY!!! They can't sink house foundations as they could create a mini steam hole so houses are built on a surface platform.

In some places, the earth's hot core is just inches below the surface creating pools of boiling mud, hot water and steam. And I do mean hot! Just pop in a teabag and you would have an instant brew. Mother nature is really awesome.

The heating and hot water in the hotel are all-natural, with no boiler insight.

Geysir is actually a place in Iceland but the name has become synonymous with water shoots all over the world. The main active Geyser in Iceland today is Strokkur which erupts every 10 mins or so. Stand too close and it's like being blasted with a steam jet.
